Coffee Certifications

Certified 100% Organic
Certified organic coffee is coffee that has been determined by an independent certifying organization to be produced without the use of synthetic chemical fertilizers or pesticides, by farmers practising sustainable agriculture and using natural soil-building techniques. Keeping harmful chemicals out of coffee fields prevents chemical run-off into the water supply. This in turn protects the watershed, maintains bird and animal habitat, and protects the human population – those in the fields as well as those near the coffee plantations.

Member: Specialty Coffee Association of America
Hunter Bay roasts coffee in accordance with the exemplary standards set by the Specialty Coffee Association of America. Founded by coffee professionals in 1982, SCAA is the trade association for the specialty coffee industry. Specialty coffee —sometimes called “gourmet” or “premium” coffee — is coffee grown in the world’s most ideal coffee–producing regions, roasted according to traditional slow-roasting practices, and brewed to exacting standards. The SCAA provides its members with information and support in all phases of coffee production. Hunter Bay has been a member of the SCAA since 1992.

SWISS WATER® Process Decaf
Hunter Bay’s Harmony Decaf is decaffeinated using The SWISS WATER® Process, a 100% chemical free coffee decaffeination process. High quality, high-grown coffee beans are immersed in “flavor-charged” water – caffeine free water super-saturated with coffee solids—for approximately 8 hours. The flow of water over the beans extracts 99.9% of the caffeine but leaves the flavor intact. We carefully blend and roast our 100% SWP decaffeinated green coffee beans into Harmony Decaf – a rich and full-bodied cup.

Supporter: Coffee Kids
Hunter Bay is a long-time member of and regular financial contributor to Coffee Kids, a U.S.-based non-profit organization founded by specialty coffee professionals to help alleviate the poverty of the coffee-growing communities of Central and South America. Coffee Kids gathers donations from coffee professionals and consumers in the U.S. and uses those donations to provide financing for projects focussed on four areas: Health Care, Education, Micro-Credit Loans, and Community Welfare. All projects supported by Coffee Kids are designed and implemented by the people living and working in the communities.
